Deliverables & Caption File Exports

We're committed to getting you to the finish line. So whether it's getting the program to your final broadcast outlet(s) utilizing our AberFast digital file delivery services or sending standalone files back to your team for those do-it-yourselfers - we've got you covered!

Below are some of the most common standalone files requested and how they're used, but we're certainly not limited to only these...

Broadcast Standalone Caption Files

  • MCC (MacCaption Closed Caption)
MCC is a proprietary closed caption file format developed by Telestream for use with their captioning and subtitling software, MacCaption. It contains native CEA-708/608 encoded caption data as well as OP-47 Teletext. It supports various features like multiple caption streams, positioning, styling, and other advanced settings. MCC files are often used in broadcast workflows and are compatible with a wide range of professional video editing and playout systems.
  • SCC (Scenarist Closed Caption)
A universal standard used for Line 21 broadcast closed captions and the closed caption file format commonly used in the broadcasting industry, particularly for television programs. They support advanced features like roll-up captions, pop-on captions, and positioning. It is also a preferred format for YouTube.
  • CAP (Cheetah Advanced Subtitling Protocol)
CAP files are typically used in professional broadcast environments and are compatible with Cheetah's closed captioning software solutions. The CAP format may not be as widely supported by all video platforms and players compared to more standard formats like SRT or SCC. Therefore, if you need to distribute closed captions across different platforms, it may be necessary to convert the CAP files to a more universally supported format. Cheetah International offers a range of captioning solutions, including hardware and software, for various broadcasting and video production workflows.
  • AAF (Avid Advanced Authoring Format)
Avid Media Composer export. Supports OP-47 Teletext.
  • Black 720x486 movie w/ CC
Used to create line 21 black movie to add line 21 caption data in any NLE. SD only.

Web and Mobile Standalone Caption Export Files

  • SRT (SubRip)
SRT files are plain text files that contain the timing and text for each caption. They are widely used and supported by most video players and platforms like Facebook & YouTube. Simple text, no positioning - center/bottom/center appearance.
  • VTT (WebVTT for HTML5)
The next generation of SubRip SRT. They support more advanced features like positioning and styling. WebVTT is widely supported by modern browsers and video platforms.
  • Flash DFXP (Distribution Format Exchange Profile)
Various XML formats available for Flash video players.
  • SAMI (Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange)
Developed by and used for Windows Media Player.

Subtitle and Open Caption Export Files

  • Alpha Channel overlay
Any resolution video file with text over a transparent background for a simple drag and drop onto a NLE timeline. On-screen text can be made to look like captions or subtitles.
  • Adobe Encore Text
Created for DVD and Blu-ray authoring in the Adobe suite.
  • STL (Spruce Subtitle File)
Text file for Apple’s DVD Studio Pro. Option available for both editable text or TIFF images.
